Jaguar Land Rover - Implementing an agile framework

A case study covering the creation of an agile delivery framework for Jaguar Land Rover.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is the UK’s largest automotive manufacturing business, built around two iconic British car brands: Land Rover, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium all-terrain and Jaguar, one of the world’s premier luxury sports saloon and sports car marques.

The Challenge

Digital customer journeys, electric vehicles, autonomous driving, connected cars have all brought complexity to the motor manufacturing industry. Government legislation, public sentiment around fossil fuels and other challenges creates an unpredictable environment for automotive manufacturers.

We recognised that we need to revise the way we think and act so that we all can thrive in the unpredictable, complex environment in which we now operate

JLR has identified that it needs to be more flexible, more agile and in particular bring solutions to market in unprecedented timeframes. This does not only apply to vehicles, but also to it’s solutions, systems, factories and core infrastructure.

The Solution

As a starting point, we identified a pain point concerning dealer reserved stock. A dealer can reserve a vehicle, but if it does not sell it remains on the forecourt and over time loses value. We developed an iOS application in 16-weeks which enabled other dealerships across the country to search and reserve stock.

We used this project to develop an agile delivery framework for JLR. We looked at implications on governance processes, internal standards and how remote teams are managed. We looked at the role of the product owners, the establishment of a digital backlog and how applications are released into live.

We then established ‘agile guilds’ to own the framework, refine it and ensure it is adopted across the organisation.
